The Universal House of Justice

A new official website of the Baha’i Faith has been launched providing general information about the Universal House of Justice – the international governing body of the Baha’i community – and making available selected statements and letters that have been written by it or prepared under its supervision.

The Universal House of Justice is unique in religious history. Never before has a Manifestation of God explicitly ordained the establishment of an institution with the mandate to maintain the integrity and flexibility of His religion, safeguard the unity and guide the activities of His followers and exert a beneficial influence on the life of society.

The Universal House of Justice is elected every five years by representatives of over 170 national Baha’i communities. The most recent election took place in April 2013, the fiftieth anniversary of when it was established.

The official website for the Universal House of Justice can be viewed at The Universal House of Justice.

To Serve Humanity

To Serve Humanity

In February 2013, the Universal House of Justice announced a series of youth conferences to be held around the world. Thousands of young people from villages and neighborhoods spanning every continent gathered to consult on the ways in which their generation can contribute to the spiritual and material well-being of their  communities.

Antananarivo Youth Conference Madagascar | 2-4 August 2013

In the midmost heart of the Indian Ocean, 43 young men and women embarked on the first leg of a 3,000-kilometre journey that would take them from Seychelles to Madagascar. During their transit in Mauritius they were joined by 79 of their peers from this country and Rodrigues. As parents and families escorted their youth to the airport, they were filled with a singular joy at seeing the path of service their youth had chosen for themselves. Nearly 600 beaming faces gathered from the islands of Madagascar, Mauritius, Réunion, Rodrigues, and Seychelles, at Espace Mahavokisoa, a hall surrounded by lush green rice fields in Antananarivo.

Baha’i Fast – from March 2nd to 20th

Port Louis, Mauritius,  2 March 2014,

The Baha’i Fast lasts for 19 days, from March 2nd to 20th. In the Baha’i calendar this period corresponds to the month of Ala, (meaning Loftiness), the last month of the Baha’i year. During this period, adult Baha’is — with the exception of those who are elderly, sick, travelling, or engaging in heavy labour, and women who are nursing or pregnant — abstain from food and drink between sunrise and sunset.

Fasting is the cause of awakening man. The heart becomes tender and the spirituality of man increases. This is produced by the fact that man’s thoughts will be confined to the commemoration of God, and through this awakening and stimulation surely ideal advancements follow… Fasting is of two kinds, material and spiritual. The material fasting is abstaining from food or drink, that is, from the appetites of the body. But spiritual, ideal fasting is this, that man abstain from selfish passions, from negligence and from satanic animal traits. Therefore, material fasting is a token of the spiritual fasting. That is: `O God! As I am fasting from the appetites of the body and not occupied with eating and drinking, even so purify and make holy my heart and my life from aught else save Thy Love, and protect and preserve my soul from self-passions… Thus may the spirit associate with the Fragrances of Holiness and fast from everything else save Thy mention.
